This week we did our annual, as required by the state, testing. Blech...I didn't really teach what was going to be on the test, kinda defeats the purpose of homeschooling. So the kids were a bit anxious that they wouldn't do well. I reassured them it was no big deal, they're probably not going to fail, and the results of the test will show us how they compare to other kids in the country. Not that it really matters how they compare, right? Ack...needless to say the conversation about testing was kinda awkward-"please do your best, but it doesn't really matter how you do." As it turned out I think they did awesome, they both said it wasn't too challenging.
I've also been shopping - for new curricula. We have already pretty much finished up our 13-14 school year, just have math to finish. But since we are schooling year round its time to get everything together...
- History is good, we found "Story of the World" by Susan Bauer in our first year of HSing. It is awesome, the kids love it and we all learn a lot about history. This year we are reading Vol. 2, The Middle Ages.
- Math, well I found Teaching Textbooks (TT) last year and it has worked really well. But for the boy, who is so logical, I think he may need something more. So I found Art of Problem Solving (AoPS). It looks incredible! Its written by some super mathy people for mathy minded people. So I ordered the text and we'll see what happens. I think the girl will probably stay with TT because AoPS doesn't start until middle school and their elementary curriculum, Beast Academy isn't completed yet.
